Abstract

Conference interpreting remains an essential yet relatively underexplored dimension of translation studies, despite its centrality to international communication. This paper examines the psychological factors that influence the performance of professionally trained interpreters who often hesitate to assume oral bilingual responsibilities, resulting in a professional vacuum frequently filled by untrained individuals. Particular attention is given to three interrelated psychological traits—anxiety, fear, and cognitive interference—that shape interpreters’ ability to process and reproduce meaning accurately under real-time pressure. The discussion explores the cognitive and emotional mechanisms underlying these traits, including heightened performance stress, emotional regulation difficulties, and the heavy mental load associated with rapid language switching. These challenges are analyzed in both simultaneous and consecutive interpreting contexts to highlight their distinct manifestations. The paper further argues that neglecting these psychological dimensions diminishes interpreter effectiveness and undermines communication quality in multilingual conferences. To address these challenges, a set of evidence-informed interventions is proposed, including specialized interpreter training, psychological preparedness programs, and stress management strategies designed to build resilience and enhance professional competence. By integrating insights from psychology, linguistics, and communication studies, this work underscores the interdisciplinary nature of conference interpreting and calls for a more holistic approach to interpreter education and practice.
