For Authors

Submission Guidelines

Official guidelines for contributors to Kiabara: Journal of Humanities: Journal of Humanities. Read carefully before preparing your manuscript.

1. Editorial Scope & Policy

Kiabàrà publishes original scholarship in the humanities with a particular focus on African and African diaspora intellectual traditions. We welcome work that engages with literature, cultural studies, philosophy, history, linguistics, theatre, gender studies, and related fields.

Submission implies that the work is original, has not been previously published, and is not concurrently under active consideration by any other journal or repository.

2. Manuscript Specifications

Authors must strictly format files before submission according to the structural conditions below:

  • File Format: Accepted extensions include .docx or .rtf. Submitted electronically as an email attachment.
  • Manuscript Length: Research Articles should fall between 6000 and 9000 words. Critical Essays should fall between 4000 and 6000 words, inclusive of references, endnotes, and appendices.
  • Abstract: A single-paragraph overview of 150–250 words summarising the research problem, methodology, findings, and conclusion.
  • Keywords: Provide between 5 and 7 keywords directly below the abstract. Keywords must be specific, relevant to the study, and separated by commas.

3. Citation Style Framework

Kiabara: Journal of Humanities accepts the Chicago author-date manuals of style. Authors must select the style most appropriate for their specific discipline and apply it with absolute consistency throughout the entire manuscript — in-text citations, endnotes, and the final reference list or bibliography.

Ensure complete inclusion of DOI indicators within your reference strings where digital object records exist.

4. Author Identity & Anonymity Policy

To preserve the integrity of the double-blind peer-review process, author identity is strictly managed at different stages:

For Initial Submission — Separate Cover Page

The main manuscript file must contain no identifying information. All personal details must be confined to a separate cover page submitted alongside the manuscript. The cover page should include:

  • Full article title
  • Author(s) full name(s) — without academic titles or ranks
  • Institutional affiliation (Department and University)
  • Contact details for editorial correspondence (email and phone — for internal use only)

On the Published Article — Standardised Layout

Accepted articles follow a standardised format focused on the scholarship:

  • No professional titles or statuses — academic ranks (e.g., Prof., Dr., Mr., PhD Candidate) are omitted.
  • No contact information — phone numbers and individual email addresses are not printed.
  • Permitted: Author's full legal/academic name and institutional affiliation only.

5. Publication Ethics

Kiabàrà is committed to upholding the highest standards of publication ethics. The journal subscribes to the guidelines of the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE) and expects all authors, reviewers, and editors to adhere to these standards.
