Abstract

Digital technologies have become part of everyday Christian life, but their growing influence continues to provoke debate about the nature of Christian presence and communal worship. As more churches move across physical and digital spaces, questions remain about how faith communities sustain belonging, fellowship, and pastoral relationships in an increasingly mediated world. This study explores how livestream worship is reshaping Christian community in Port Harcourt, Nigeria. It argues that digital worship is best understood not as a substitute for gathering in church but as a developing form of religious participation through which churches respond to changing social realities while preserving important aspects of Christian life. Using a qualitative research design, the study draws on semi-structured interviews with church leaders and worshippers from Pentecostal, Protestant, and Catholic traditions. Thematic analysis was undertaken within an integrated framework anchored in Mediatization Theory and enriched by African Pentecostal scholarship and the idea of hybrid religious participation. The study found that churches are creatively adapting digital technologies to sustain pastoral care, strengthen communal ties, and extend Christian fellowship beyond the limits of place. Even so, important questions remain about embodiment, pastoral authority, accountability, and the place of physical gathering in Christian worship. The study therefore argues that African Christian experiences broaden current debates on digital religion and provide fresh insights into the changing relationship between technology, faith, and community.
